FAQ
How did people get together to play music, with little knowledge of how to write music down on paper or the concepts?
It was quite a challenge. People very rarely jammed with people from outside their own village or family for that matter. Due to the lack of knowledge of pitch or the concepts there was no set key for the instruments to be tuned too so it was very hard for instruments to play in harmony or even create a half descent sound. Due to this fact esspecially in early parts of the medieval period very few songs were played with more than 2 instrumentalists at a time.
Did people of all socio - economic backgrounds get the chance to both play and listen to music?
The majority of the peoples in the middle ages only got a taste of music at church. Playing music genneraly came down to a persons access to the materials required to make an instrument. However not many people of the poorer community had the time or the skills to create an instrument.
What were the songs written about?
Around 90% of the songs written at the time were about God for the church. These songs were gennerally very simple and was very rarely played with more than 2 instruments as there was no standard way to write music, no notes to tune to etc. The rest of the music either didn't involve lyrics or was performed by minsterals to honour an important person like a royal or a knight. This was put into popular culture by films like Monty Python and the holy grail through the song Sir Robin.
